Secondary Math Pathways
Secondary Math Pathways in ASD5
Beginning in fifth grade, at the end of every school year every student is assessed using multiple data points (iReady, SBA, and teacher rating) to determine their math placement for the following year. There are three pathways that students may travel, and their placement is made based on data at the end of each year. Students and families requesting an advanced placement review must do so in writing by May 15th, and additional evaluative data may be taken.
Students who are placed in advanced pathways have the opportunity to take Algebra I for high school credit while in middle school.
Students who are new to the District will be evaluated for placement based on transcript grades, and previous assessment scores, and may be given additional tests to assess or confirm knowledge and skills.
Traditional Pathway
Students complete the math course that matches their grade level. Students receive a solid foundation of skills and master the standards necessary to succeed in higher-level math. This can be re-evaluated on an as-needed case-by-case basis after fall testing.
Accelerated Pathway
Students who are rated above grade level and possess the necessary work ethic to succeed in an off-grade placement are offered an accelerated pathway. These students work half a grade up to a full grade ahead of their actual grade level. This can be re-evaluated on an as-needed case-by-case basis after fall testing and placement may change.
Exceptional Pathway
Students who have consistently demonstrated above-grade-level performance may be placed on the exceptional pathway. This can be re-evaluated on an as-needed case-by-case basis after fall testing and placement may change.
